Different folks have been curious what this song is really about. As a song
of restoration, it could be understood as any individual coming back to the Lord, or to their first love. But the song was actually inspired by some research I was doing on the early days of the Pentecostal movement, and the life of FF Bosworth. I was raised in the Pentecostal church, but while researching its history, I was struck by the disparity between the early days of the Pentecostal church – the holiness, the freshness, the utter
consecration, and what it has become today. Those feelings pressed themselves into this song – with some hope in the end, in spite of the desperate situation. The words came first, in this case. I figured out the music while working at a factory, then hurried home to try it out. Alas, like so many of my songs, it was clearly not for me to sing. About 6 months
later I met Wes Ardiel and thought he would be perfect for the song. He sang it beautifully, as always. Thank you also to Christina Alexander for help and input on the lyrics. – Mark Aho
